Underage Drinking & the Law

What parents need to know now about the new Social Host Laws

High Season for Bad Behavior

It’s not yet 9:30am and the inbox is full with several high-profile stories and arrests. Starting at 2:00am and throughout the day, I get news alerts from papers and websites across the country. Here are a few of the most interesting from today with links to the articles. We have a teacher, a school board member, a celebrity and a governor’s son:

Teacher suspended after deputies said she allowed underage drinking. On May 26th, a Salem Indiana middle-school science and social-studies teacher and her husband, Laura and John Mahuron, threw a high school graduation party for their daughter. An anonymous caller complained and police found a dozen 16- and 17-year olds who tested positive for alcohol plus 11 teens 18 and older. The daughter was not drinking. While the Mahuron’s fight the charges (they’re accused of permitting drinking, not of supplying the alcohol), the school board chose to suspend the teacher for a year without pay, rather than fire her. School board member, wife arrested for allegedly hosting underage drinking party. A South Dearborn Illinois school board member and his wife, Terry and Tawnya Luhrsen, threw a party for approximately 75 teens with “a tent and a ‘large beer trailer parked next to it’…The teens fled into the surrounding woods when police arrived…Terry Luhrsen, who has been on the school board since 2004 and also is an assistant South Dearborn High School baseball coach, and his wife, Tawyna, were both charged with 20 counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor, and one count of neglect of a dependent, a class D felony,” the last charge being due to the alleged consumption of alcohol by their 17-year-old daughter. R.I. Attorney General still reviewing underage drinking party at Governor Chafee’s estate.  The Providence Journal announces there’s still no decision from the attorney general’s office regarding charges for the small pool party allegedly thrown by the Rhode Island Governor’s son (anyone else remember the “Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead” routine from season 1 of SNL?) However, for those who have been following the story here (Rhode Island Governor’s son charged), the Providence Journal was kind enough to provide a link to all the exciting details, including how the governor’s aide was repaid for vouching for young Chafee with the loss of his $500 a month guest house on the Exeter estate: More on the issue of underage drinking in R.I.

And this week’s underage drinking celebrity photo comes to us courtesy of Fulbright Scholar Paul Banks’ website The Sports Bank.net who published photos of 19-year-old Kate Upton enjoying a beer at a Detroit Tigers game. Click the photo to visit his site and more images.
