The first person to be cited under Mercer Island’s new Social Host ordinance is a dad who was out-of-town and out of the loop at the time of the party.
According to KOMO 4 News, “In late February, police broke up a house party in the Mercerdale neighborhood. Officers cited five teenagers for minor in possession of alcohol.” It’s unclear whether the five teens comprised the full guest list or if they were the only ones drinking illegally.
On the video, one parent expresses support for the law as is and its consequences while a second parent believes the law isn’t fair. She confesses her reluctance to contact the police if she discovers teens drinking to avoid being cited and getting a record.
