A week after NBC’s The Today Show discussed ways to teach children how to drink responsibly, CBS’s The Early Show covered the story with an alternate point-of-view: Don’t do it. Kathleen Rice, district attorney of New York’s Nassau County, reminds parents “What we need is more parents who are willing to be parents to their children, and not their children’s friend.” Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Hartstein recommends both being open and authoritative when talking to your children about drinking. Perhaps the most confusing advice, from a Social Host Law perspective, was her closing comment, “And parties that are unsupervised with drinking show kids have greater risk with drinking problems later.” We know parties that are supervised with drinking result in parents behind bars.
